John Barr Colwell was born November 26, 1909, in Pawnee City, Nebraska. He received his commission as ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1931, and achieved the rank of vice admiral in 1964. James Woodrow Kelly was born December 24, 1913, in Carthage, Arkansas. He received his commission as Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps in 1942, and advanced through the grades to the rank of rear admiral in 1963. He was appointed Chief of Chaplains in 1965.
